Matthews began as a farming community known as Stumptown until the Central Carolina Railroad arrived in 1874, and the town was incorporated in 1879. Ten buildings in its downtown make up a historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. Around that historic core, Matthews has grown into a suburb of about 29,400 residents at the 2020 census.
